Water Filters For Treatment Plants

Dec. 06, 2023

Wastewater treatment facilities, both municipal and industrial, rely on wastewater screening as an essential step to retain solids present in the wastewater. These solids must be effectively removed at the outset of the water treatment process to prevent decreased system efficiency, potential damage to crucial water treatment equipment, and the risk of water contamination, which could lead to ecological disturbances ranging from minor to significant across an entire region.

A screen, a type of technology within filtration systems, serves dual primary purposes: acting as a large strainer in water intakes and wastewater treatment, as well as separating solid particles of varying sizes found within mixtures, whether dry or in a liquid state. Although there are similarities between strainers and screens, the notable difference lies in the latter's larger size and its specific function. Strainers typically safeguard filters by discarding larger particles within a flow system. Conversely, screens are designed to differentiate and segregate particles based on their sizes. Moreover, in various filtration setups, screens function as filters to separate solids from liquids, particularly in dewatering wet solids.

Both screens and strainers in the filtration process are crafted using perforated plates, woven wire, or wedge wire screens designed with intricately entangled rough wire.

Notable Water Filter Types in Treatment Plants:

Screen Filters:

These filters, using a flexible or rigid screen, strain particulate matter from water, primarily for industrial or agricultural purposes like irrigation or aquaculture. They often boast high flow rates compared to other filter types but may not be optimal for filtering organic matter. Some automated screen filters incorporate a flush valve that opens periodically to expel accumulated waste, known as an automatic backwash cycle.

Disc Filters:

Similar to screen filters, disc filters are advantageous in treating water for industrial and agricultural needs, especially in irrigation systems. They possess the ability to backflush rapidly and with minimal water usage compared to other filter types. The cartridge's design, composed of bumpy or grooved plastic discs stacked together, gives rise to the name disc filter. These discs, color-coded to indicate filtration levels, capture particulate matter as water traverses the spaces between them.

Stationary Water Screens:

In extensive water handling systems, various screens are installed to separate solid particles from water. For instance, screens deployed in water intake from rivers, lakes, or seas serve to remove debris accompanying the water source. Notably, screens and strainers perform distinct functions, with the choice of screen type contingent on the specific location and the desired separation criteria. For example, separating weed or grass from seawater necessitates a different screen type capable of resisting mesh passage and clogging. Screens also play a crucial role in separating large inorganic solids from sewage and industrial waste, holding back solids on the screen mesh and requiring routine clearing to prevent clogging issues.

We offer a comprehensive range of wedge wire screen filters, filter housings, and media suitable for various applications, including water filtration, agriculture, chemical, and food processing. Please contact us if you have any questions.
